MUA recommends: the best foundations for Indian brown skin
Makeup artist recommends: best foundations for Indian brown skin
Every girl with Indian brown skin can relate to the challenges of finding the perfect foundation. This has been a lifelong struggle for me, and was the subject of one of my first blog posts – in search of the perfect foundation.
You’ll know if you’ve read my many blog posts on beauty that I’m something of a makeup novice. In fact that’s the reason I started Halimabobs.com, to be the everywoman British-Bengali blogger in a sea of filters. However, sometimes you need the experts.
Luckily for me, and you, I’ve got friends in high places. Makeup artist Amina has taken over this blog to share her guest post below, on her best foundations for Indian brown skin…
(P.s. the reason I say ‘Indian brown skin’ is because this is best used to describe south Asian skin which has a yellow undertone).

My name is Amina also known as @BeautyByAKartistry on Instagram. My working background for the last 14 years has been in Opticians as Assistant Manager/Senior Dispenser, but I always felt unfulfilled so decided to finally put time into my passion for makeup. After years of learning from YouTube I undertook makeup lessons from amazing MUA’s beautybyroxc and makeupbymus.
Finding the right foundation for Indian brown skin – my journey
I remember when I was younger and started wearing makeup as a darker skinned Bengali girl, high street foundations were a definite no as shade didn’t go close to my complexion. I tried high end but had to mix 2 Mac foundations for my skin tone. High street brands are getting better but have a long way to go to match the high end foundations that are bringing out 30-50 shades to include every skin tone.
Halima has asked me to write about Best Foundations for brown/Asian skin and why, so here are my top 5.
Just so you know, I use all 5 myself. I don’t necessarily have a favourite as it depends on mood/coverage/skin finish wanted to which foundation I use.
1) Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation (rrp £34)
- 44 shades (cool, neutral or warm)
This foundation is like magic in a bottle, it does exactly as it says and leaves a flawless finish, full coverage and one pump is enough for your whole face. The staying power is amazing, I have had this on for 8 hours. Only downside to this foundation which I personally don’t have a problem with is the scent which some people may be sensitive to.
2) Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation (rrp £27)
Fenty beauty is the makeup brand of Rihanna who launched in 2017, she launched with 40 shades of foundation which left the beauty world in shock.

This is a lightweight yet full coverage foundation, blends so well into the skin but you have to work quick before it sets. This foundation is the cheapest of my top 5 foundations for Indian brown skin.
3) NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (rrp £33.50)

- 34 shades (light, medium, medium/dark, dark)

This foundation is great for light to medium coverage with a subtle glow. It feels very lightweight, blends easily and gives a natural look finish. I use this foundation as my everyday go-to foundation for light coverage.
4) Anastasia Beverly Hills Luminous Foundation (rrp £43)
- 50 shades (fair, light, medium, tan & deep)
This foundation blends effortlessly but is best used with a brush rather than a beauty blender. This foundation leaves a dewy effect on the skin and is buildable from natural to full coverage. This foundation is the most expensive of the 5 I have chosen but in my opinion worth it.
5) Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation (rrp £33)
Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation on brown skin
- 30 shades ranges from fair skin tones to the deep dark tones.
This foundation claims and delivers a filter like airbrush finish that leaves my skin looking flawless, covers uneven skin tone and the coverage is buildable to full coverage. This foundation is thick so I do like to mix foundations and is great mix with NARS foundations but use on its own for heavier coverage.
Huda beauty, after listening to its customers have just announced they are re formulating this foundation so it’s fragrance free, non-comedogenic, non-drying, waterproof, mask/transfer proof and luminous matte finish which is out now.
Buying foundations online during lockdown
You may find this tricky but generally most brands have a tool of their websites where they ask few questions or taking a selfie so shades can be worked out that way or this can be done on on the beauty bay website which is how I found my Huda Beauty shade.
