When planning our trip to Malaysia, friends of ours recommended that we visit the Manadarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur Hotel for afternoon tea.

Promising glitz and glam, the Mandarin Oriental didn’t disappoint.

The decadent tea room at the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur

The Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur is one of the most exclusive hotels in the city.  Slightly out of our budget for an overnight stay, but an affordable luxury for afternoon tea.

When we arrived, slightly underdressed I have to say, we were amazed by the grandeur of the place.
With a large piano in the corner and a spiralling staircase, the Mandarin shunned modern chic, instead opting for decadent décor.

The afternoon tea was to the back of the ground floor.  We found that we were in good company, as a
flurry of evening gowns, cummerbunds and black ties made their way up the stairs – clearly there was some swanky event going on.
Anyway, from the moment we arrived, we were waited on hand and foot by the perfectly mannered staff.  We really did get the five star treatment, we weren’t left waiting for our tea, staff kept checking on us to make sure we were attended to, every whim was catered for.
As well as ordering off the menu (a banoffee dessert and marble cake) we also selected some small individual chocolates from the counter, each of which had unique flavours.
The banoffee dessert was delicious in its sickly sweet nature, however I wasn’t so keen on the marble cake.  Both desserts however, were incredibly filling due to their richness, so we could have easily shared one.
However, as any afternoon tea-lover will know, it’s not really about the food.  It’s the experience that really counts.  With Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, you get to have tea in a place of sheer luxury and
decadence, get treated like a VIP and have some great photo opportunities and memories.
