How to make a jacket potato without the oven

January 28, 2023

With the cost of living crisis, we are all looking for easy food hacks and simple recipes that make life easier and keep our bills down.

I was therefore delighted when I discovered a super simple hack to make jacket potatoes without the oven!

Jacket potatoes are my comfort food.

The simple taste of a slow roasted potato with cheese, beans and/or coleslaw is perfect for winter and all year around.

However, to make a great tasting baked potato, you need to have it in the oven for around 90 minutes. In these strained times, where we’re trying to avoid putting our oven on, it’s not the most economical of dishes. Especially if you’re like my house, where not everybody wants a jacket potato (are they crazy?!) so I’m often making just one or two.

Another option is to boil a potato so it’s almost cooked and then finish it off in the oven. However, to get a true crispiness, you still need to have the oven on for around 20 minutes to half an hour.

Tawa jacket potato

This tawa jacket potato couldn’t be simpler. If you have a tawa, the flat, large circular pan used for chapatis or rotis, then you can make yourself yummy jacket potatoes without using an oven.

Method for Jacket potato without the oven

Simply boil the jacket potatoes until about 90% cooked.

Then, put the jacket potatoes onto a tawa. Cook on a medium heat until the skin is dried out and crispy.

You’ll need to turn over the potatoes a few times to ensure that they get golden brown on all sides.

I use a salad tong to do this.

The result is a crispy jacket potato with a smokey, roasted taste.

Not only does it taste great, it’s a super economical dish!
